Description
This time I was driven in by approaching thunderstorms instead of the black flies shortly after I began this painting on location. So it remains a fast study, even showing the bright orange canvas which I stained with oil before painting. I am facing the pond and the Campton Dam with the waterfall is directly behind me as I paint.
Campton Pond is now a picturesque water body on the right side of route 49 which leads to the entrance of White Mountain National Forest and Waterville Valley. Not always the case as Campton Pond and dam have been an important part of the economic history of Campton, New Hampshire. The first dam at this site was built in the early 1890s by the Winnepiseogee Paper Co. It held the 16 logs which came Mad River in the spring from the logging operations in Waterville Valley. The sawmill cut the logs into 4 length for the area pulp mills, and used the best quality wood in the making of pianos. In 1892, a railroad spur was built from the main B & M line 1 mile south, up along what is now route 49. At the pond, it was loaded onto flat cars for shipping to mills in Franklin and Lincoln, New Hampshire.

That splash of underneath red-orange you are famous for is so exciting in not only this work, but all of your works as a signature touch. Love this with the greens so much Nancy. F/L.
