Description
A mechanism for smoking hides is on the left, it is fired by wood, to smoke a tanned hide and is part of the finishing process of tanning. This was taken during a tanning workshop. The smoke would billow as the top of this was opened to check the hides that lay flat in this structure. Deerskins hang to dry in the background. Hand tanning is an old world skill that is still being kept alive across the states by a relative few.
I learned how to tan hides in the traditional manner that the Native Americans did by attending a workshop. The animals used were road kills and supplied for this event. Nothing was wasted, we learned traditional brain tanning skills and the end result was warm and soft hides which can be worn and appreciated in the winter months.
