Description
Piermont Meeting House, Piermont, New Hampshire
This building was located farther north up Rte 10 (which runs along the Connecticut River Valley). Built in 1807 as a Methodist Episcopal Chruch
It was relocated to the center of Piermont in 1856. The parsonage next to it was built in 1865. It was the Methodist Episcopal Church. By 1935 the membership was dwindling and the town purchased the building and used it as a library, fire department, police station, meeting room, selectman's office and it was totally rebuilt on the inside. In 1999 it was even used for extra classroom space for the school. Nowadays it is used a a community room and voting takes place there. At taht point in 1935, the Methodists alternated usage of the Congregational church in town for services and continued to use the church on occasion until 1946.
The sun was just poking out after a gray day as I exited the Piermont Library directly across the street during mid- February.
According to the Piermont historian, (Helga), there used to be two entrance doors, one for saints, one for sinners. The top of the steeple used to have a weather vane. Today it is used as a community hall in which elections and meetings take place.
