Description
The bright sun was coming from behind the subject and I let the camera wash this picture out, I like it that way. This man is performing a step in the tanning process. He is wringing out a buckskin that has just been soaked and will take every last drop of water or brains out of it during this twisting and wringing process. After this he will unfold and stretch and work the skin until soft before smoking. I met him and many more at a tanning event. This is an old world skill practiced by Native Americans that I was fortunate to both witness and be a part of.
I learned how to tan hides in the traditional manner that the Native Americans did by attending a workshop. The animals used were road kills and supplied for this event. Nothing was wasted, we learned traditional brain tanning skills and the end result was warm and soft hides which can be worn and appreciated in the winter months.
