Basketweaving 1974
Artist
Nancy Griswold
Medium
Painting - Acrylic On Canvas
Description
Long before the digital era, this painting was made by meticulously taping and painting layers over layers. It is a large study of vibrating colors I executed during my color and design studies with artist, John Avakian of Boston. I did this while attending Mount Ida Junior College, Newton, Massachusetts for my degree in Graphic Design.
I was later told about the torture chambers during World War Two that were painted with these vibrating colors so the prisoners would go mad. These colors did vibrate on this canvas when viewing in person. We studied many color theories of Joseph Albers from the Bauhaus during these color and design classes.
This is the second painting I did of this design, the first was simply other colors which also vibrated.
I scanned a slide to share this with you as there were no digital cameras during this era.
