This is a fast study I did in late fall at Halls Lake in Newbury, Vermont. I was hoping to get back for a second session but time eluded me so it is posted as is. Plein Air oil painting is essential to me as practicing chords is for a piano player. I make faster decisive decisions on layout, color and value. it is always a good idea for me to do several studies over the course of the year. My sittings range from 2-4 hours, using either morning or afternoon sun. This was a two hour adventure. I love being out in the elements and more likely to get into a meditative zone when painting in nature as I am enveloped in moving light and visual changes to the landscape. The fresh and quick application of paint is likely more spontaneous and fresh when I work en plein air. I left this location as the sun set over the hill and the foreground became but a shadow. Where I live in Northern New England, the sun setting is often followed by a drop in temperature too, so I quickly pack to go home.
