This is a detail from a larger oil painting I did titled Whispers in the Woods.
This oil painting is a conglomeration of two memories here in mid New Hampshire and Vermont.
One was when I was on top of a hill driving through a forest of high trees and looked out to see deer roaming through the forest. This happened the same week I was exiting the St Gaudins National Park in Cornish, New Hampshire. The road was winding down a hill in a forest of tall pine trees. In the distance there was light coming through the forest from the clearing where Mount Ascutney was on the Vermont side of the Connecticut River. This light near dusk filtered through the forest in such a beautiful way.
It is also a story of color compliments, analageous color, distance and ambient light. This work was done with intermittent glazing between layers to add a luminous effect.

Nancy this reminds me of so many early morning hunts I had with my son a lot of years ago when I was still teaching him. But so much more of a morning in Center County, PA when I was in college a hundred years ago. It was almost the same scene in the deep woods, but snow on the ground and the deer were all herded up on their winter yards scattered throughout the scene. Did not shoot any but certainly appreciated it and now your scratched my memory....Thanks so much.

I was trying to decide which of your landscapes is my favorite and it’s so hard! Your work is stunning and so incredibly detailed. However, I think this one I’m most drawn to… maybe because you’ve made me feel like I’m there. On a stroll, taking in the brilliance of the day. Thank you for sharing your gift!
Nancy Griswold replied:
That is such a nice comment Denise, I really appreciate your time in writing it and your reflection on my work, very kind

What a joyous rhythm of color and movement in these vertical tree trunks and the lighting. I love vertical images on horizontal surfaces. Always have. This is excellent Nancy. F/L.

The forest light has the most wonderful teal hues peeking through the stark tree trunks so that the entire scene is warm with life .. :; beautiful artwork, Nancy!;))
