FARMER HODGES FARM IN FAIRLEE, VERMONT IN AUTUMN
The oil painting itself without title is the NEXT image
I painted this in two very warm afternoons at Farmer Hodges Farm, Rte 5, Fairlee, Vermont. It was an enriching time meeting the owners Mr. and Mrs. Hodges (both 90 yrs old, active and sharp). Priscilla, a devoted helper, was great company too.
The farm was built in the 1800’s by Mr. Hodges grandfather from Scotland. The family has been farming since 1846. The grandfather originally farmed sheep here and some cows too. Mr. Hodges the grandson (now 90 years old) was a seaman and went on a relief and goodwill ship to England called the USS Little Rock after WW2 ended. When he returned he built the Milk House which stands right in front of the barn on the left. There also used to be a silo to the right of the barn.
The family continues to run the farm and they have a farm stand right where I am standing when I painted this. The cows they own are registered Holsteins. I had an opportunity to meet Mr. Hodge’s granddaughter too who now cares for the cows and works into the night if needed. She explained that this land near the Connecticut River is the best soil for farming anywhere and I have to agree with her from my own experience. Farming is enriching yet a very laborious and difficult life here in Vermont. During my visit they covered the silage which is a big job that went into the night.
They carry many wonderful gifts and farm produce at there farm stand which has been open seasonally the last 40 years. During Christmas time they make wreaths and other greenery. I came home with some cider and Cortland apples too! There have many baskets of homegrown fruits and vegetables at the farm stand too. The news of their products is spread by word of mouth and through the grapevine. I found a nice article on this farm at the CabotCheese.coop/blog
