This is a plein air painting I did on location in two sessions right before an Easter weekend.
Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Franconia is on Profile Road in Franconia, New Hampshire within the White Mountains. It was built 1832, called the Union Church which was congregational and Baptist, in 1884, the Congregationalist built their own church and the Baptists held the church until 1939 when the Baptist joined membership with the Congregationalists again. In 1947 the church was sold to the Catholics and they moved the church to near the center of town next to the Town Building. The bell in this church was given by Moses Arnold Dow in 1864 when it was the Union Church.
The Mountain in the background is Mount Lafayette that sits within the White Mountain National Forest. The summit (5249 feet) to the right top of the mountain takes on a very dramatic appearance in the winter from the center of Franconia Village. I did amplify the height of this mountain as it seems to loom over the village adding a striking background to a very simple and small New England town. Mount Lafayette is a part of the Franconia Range and is the tallest Mountain in the Franconia Range.
This painting is now sold but prints, framed prints cards and other reproductions are available on this page.

Your great features are so, so well deserved. This has an Edward Hopper feel, who is a painter I really enjoy. A delight to behold this work is. F/L.
Nancy Griswold replied:
So appropriate, yes, I too was a Hopper-ite, for many many years but now in love with so many different artist's works too!
