Description
A documentary photograph. This man is called Josh. He is a tradesman who has faithfully and diligently learned the old world trade of brain tanning and now knows much about leather aand how to make a tanned hide and buskskin the old world way. He has made this beautiful moose hide soft and shows it to me after hmany hours of labor in softening it through working with old tools and his hands. Quite often Josh works into the wee night hours on his hides and reaches higher levels of craftsmanship than many who dare to try this trade. He is an very outdoor, nature and country oriented individual.
I learned how to tan hides in the traditional manner that the Native Americans did by attending this workshop. The animals used were road kills and supplied for this event. Nothing was wasted, we learned traditional brain tanning skills and the end result was warm and soft hides which can be worn and appreciated in the winter months.
