Description
Just a little explanatory image of my plein air oil painting I do in New England.
This is a 14 x 11 oil painting on linen I did by the Swiftwater Covered Bridge in Bath, NH at midday with a local group of outdoor painters. I love to do plein air painting. It is essential to me to be outdoors and working in the immediate surroundings of changing light and weather elements. This day was brutally hot and humid and our session was short, calling for fast decisions. I usually challenge myself with limitations, here I used flat large brushes and a very limited palette of color minus greens.
I prefer to set up at noon and paint until the light changes radically near dusk when the sun has lowered and the light shadows are strong. This type of work calls for direct and immediate decision making when painting. I work with fast application which leaves a spontaneous and fluid painterly effect. Sometimes I add a touch or two in my studio when I get home. The work is varnished after it is completely dry. I do love plein air although my season here is limited for this type of work so I also do studio works in the winter and touch up paintings I did outside earlier.
See more of my pictures in my photos on my page on Facebook titled "Nancy Griswold - Fine Artist" I keep current and updated painting posts there.

It's neat to hear how you do plein air, Nancy. My group tries to get out early in the morning when it's cooler. Of course, the light changes quickly so we have to paint fast, nailing down the shadow shapes then working in the lights. Aren't we blessed to be able to do this!? I like your painting better than the actual scene- the limited palette suits the subject and you've done a beautiful job with the brushwork and composition. Lovely work! LF
Nancy Griswold replied:
Thanks Bonnie, the minute I saw the vitality and fresh painertly work you did I was almost sure you were also a plein air painter. very nice comment, thanks for the L/F

What a great, great collection of images showing your work and the spot you painted this scene Nancy. I love how you did this. Wow, this really shares so much about your art with the viewer. Thank you for this. F/L.
Nancy Griswold replied:
Thanks Randy, I am glad to hear this as I think it was you who offered pictures of your shows and a few profiles. It really helped me see the scale and how much work is involved in an exhibit of yours.. Thank you for THAT my friend. I was thinking cards might be good to send to friends of these images composites.
