Description
This is a pretty wild rendition I did of my roommate from a photo I took of her. We lived together long ago outside of Boston. Painted in 1975, this is over 37 years old.
She was a pretty wild girl at that time. I was captivated by this shawl she always wore and the pipe she smoked. At this time I worked on a large series of these types of contour drawings with watercolor, pen and ink with mixed media. I loved working on heavy weight Strathmore Paper and I did a lot of masking with rubber cement to create textural qualities. I tried a multitude of media and techniques on these papers. This piece even had sand, glue acrylic, watercolor, inks and more. I always continued my fine art on the side of my other graphic art employment. I was never afraid of media experimentation.
This was after my graduation from Mount Ida Junior College and before Massachusetts College of Art in 1974 -75. It was long before the digital age, so I scanned a slide to create this image.
