This is the last portrait from life I did of my closest friend and lover, Roberto. He died August 10, 2015 at 59 years old. I have never enjoyed portrait painting, but I am so glad I did this one as it was shortly afterwards he passed on. This is a quick oil sketch he encouraged me to do. It was a gift to him for his attentions and kindnesses. He was happy to get an oil painting from me that was all his own. I learned much from him about seeing life from his alternative viewpoint over the years. He had a fabulous sense of humor, yet often, as a close friend, I saw his more serious and somber side which I think is captured in this work. I am glad he posed in his Mexican woven top his brother Carlos gave him, (a popular type of shirt worn by many in Mexico). He deep dark eyes always had reflective sparkles which seemed like the universe to me.
I will never forget him and feel he is with me everyday helping me to go on. After he passed on I gave this original oil painting to his brother and made a fine framed print for myself. I wanted to make sure the original was kept in the family. Roberto felt deeply bonded with his family. He was a deeply loving spirit. We shared our times, interests and also values which brought much peace in our domestic life. For the only time in my life I felt the term "soul mate" best describes my relationship with him. We shared so many wonderful excursions and times together over the years (and hard times as well). I never laughed so much as I had with him. So fortunate for me he really liked artists. He was a great emotional support and also educated me about the Mexican artists and muralists.
I will always treasure him as a great gift to my life and miss him deeply beyond words.

This is absolutely a wonderful tribute to your late partner Roberto. Not only so well painting with love and admiration for him, it also delves into the psyche of his presence. I always love and enjoy your signature touches of oranges, and violets here and about. F/L. So sorry for your loss my friend.
Nancy Griswold replied:
RAndy, thank you so much, his birthday was this week and I spoke with his sister who went to his grave inCalifornia, birthdays are highly celebrated in his family so it is a time to remember and reunite with all those who loved him. I feel so fortunate I really experienced true love in my life, I know what it is and although the pain is great, the life experience with him was also. So grateful for your comment and the f/l dear art friend.
