This is a pretty wild rendition I did of my Grandmother from a photo I took of her when we traveled together to Prince Edward Island. She is standing on a lookout platform and looking down at me .
My grandmother here has been passed on for several years. She made a big impression upon me as I was young. Being an English Immigrant from the early 1900s just after WW1, she still practiced 4:00 tea when I visited. She told me of some of her difficult life during WW2 and raising her family in Connecticut. I learned of my English heritage through her, the fact that arts were valued in school and community in England during her youth.
She was tough, loving, hard and soft; the perfect grandmother for me.
In 1975 I worked on a large series of these type of contour drawings with watercolor, pen and ink with mixed media. I tried a multitude of media and techniques on these papers. This piece even had sand, glue acrylic, watercolor, inks and more. This was after my graduation from Mount Ida Junior College and before Massachusetts College of Art in 1975. This was the first in the series and I won an award with it at the Compugraphic Corporation Art Show where I was a typeface designer for computer typesetting systems. This was long before the digital age. I always continued my fine art on the side of my other graphic art employment. I was never afraid of media experimentation.
