This is a light box I made in 1975. This is a piece of plexiglass mounted in a shadowbox which has light coming from behind it. I worked on a small series of these works after graduating with a graphics degree from Mount Ida Junior College. Hard edge work and optical works were still popular at this time. I lived in Watertown, Massachusetts on the third floor of a flat near Boston. I commuted everyday to Compugraphic Corporation were I held a full time job as a type designer before the digital era. These works I did on my time off from the job. I slept in a front room of an apartment and at night there were shadows of the hanging plants and house plants I had in the window. The shadows were on the wall and came from the street lights outside. I remember it was on Clarendon Street in Watertown, Massachusetts and it was a rough neighborhood, I was poor and ate lentils as a weekly staple for days.
