I wrote this poem to honor this tree.
The Tree I See
Poem and 11 x 14, Oil painting on linen illustration by Nancy Griswold
The big tree I see, so stately and strong;
and all that it needs, is the wind for a song.
On hot days it shades, and cools the warm earth.
March buds share pollen, giving more rebirth.
The tree’s trunk is huge, telling me history.
Branches are many, adding to mystery.
So kind is this tree, that it filters the air.
It allows us to breath. I cherish it’s care.
Maple it’s species, the sugaring type.
In fall so brilliant and oh, what a sight.
A weather teller of sun, wind and rain;
and snow laced branches, tell of winter again.
The leaves change color, a matter of show.
Changing each minute; and sometimes they glow.
Tree sways in a storm, brings awe to my mind.
And then rests in quiet; this majestic find.
Over many long years, I think of this tree;
Season’s companion and stability.
It makes my heart warm, to have it in view.
This natural treasure, bestowed on a few.
Painted from looking outside my window and studio work later on. I look at this big old maple tree everyday out my studio room window. Over the years I have seen it grow larger, the leaves seem to change different colors each autumn. Right now all the autumn leaves are gone due to rain storms and it was a sight against the fog this morning. The tree sways with the wind and rain, it dances with the light and is silhouetted with the moonlight at night. An ever changing tree I have become attached to.
