Woman of Nepal making Yak Butter Tea

This is a 10 x 16 oil painting painted on a hand stretched canvas that has gone on and off my easel over the years and now done. What I really like is her colorful and authentic clothing in this direct evening light source which I imagine to be a cooking fire. I painted this using collected resources for reference of women churning yak butter to make a tea. Finding out about indigenous peoples from other lands, especially women and what their daily chores, has always intrigued me.

A friend of mine returned from Nepal and told me what he saw there and I took a great interest and also watched to movie called “Seven Years in Tibet"; where one can see some indigenous people drinking Yak Butter Tea.

This churn is commonly known to the Nepali people, it is around 32", seasoned, smoky wood with hammered brass decoration and has a leather strap.
FROM WIKPEDIA: The churning of butter is an important part of Nepalese livelihood. Not only a part of day-to-day activity, it is a component of traditional culture and identity of Nepalese society. It involves the separation of butter from curd by the action of centrifugation using a series of traditional devices.
