Prior a 1874 Type station was at this site, a Gothic Desin, smaller then the Duluth Type, the 1874 Type station had an open to the element "widows walk" observation post. This USLSS station was replaced by a Duluth Type Staion built in 1904.
It is a coastal station of the U. S. Life Saving Service, which was merged with the U. S. Lighthouse Service into the U. S. Coast Guard. In Turo, there were three Duluth style stations, Pamet River, Highlands and High Head. Few are still standing then. The Old Harbor Station, which was on Nauset ("North Beach" locally) in Chatham, was barged off the beach a few weeks before the Blizzard of 1978 and towed to Provincetown Harbor for the winter. It was off loaded onto National Park Service - Cape Cod National Seashore land in Provincetown where it has been refurbished and opened as an educational exhibit. This was an abandoned light house I painted on the dunes of the National seashore near Turro on Cape Cod during the summer of 1978.
These years I was beginning to study under George Nick at the Massachusetts College of Art. I had just begun to swing from painting on Masonite to canvas. Long before the digital era, this image was digitized from a slide I had. The painting is gone, but I had the slide in my archives. I am happy to look at my older work as it encourages me to be more free with my painting today. This was actually painted around 34 years ago, amazing how time flies.

I agree with Lenore. This is a real masterpiece. Those richly textured blades of grass lead right up to that spot of focal point sunlight. So great this work is Nancy. You loved the paint. I can tell. F/L.
