Description
This is one of my first large paintings in a project when studying color and design with John Avakian at Mount Ida Junior College in Newton, Massachusetts. The challenge was to make an illusional work that would be seen both as an abstract work and representational piece. We learned how to simplify even the most complicated of pictures down to 3 tones and break apart the representational aspects into pure design. This process was called closure.
This is a Saint Bernard and it's litter of puppies. A large painting using orange, blue and gold color. This was during a period when optical art was still popular and being taught in art history and art schools. I do not know the whereabouts of this painting now.
This is the second painting I did of this design, as the first sold and then this one also sold. This painting I experimented with a different color theme and use compliments with gold.
John Avakian also introduced our group the Joseph Albers studies with color at the Bauhaus.
This image is a scanned slide, my only remaining record as it predates the digital era for artists.
