This is one of my favorite story paintings I created after leaning more about the Native Americans who inhabited out New England States.
The Pequot and Abenaki are both subdivisions of the Algonquin Nation of the Northeast Territories of New England and Canada. Both tribes had similar village settings . Their shelters were longhouses made of bark or tipi-shaped bark shelters. Both spoke a derivative of the Algonquin language. The emphasis in the oil was on light and color to create an autumn filtering of light in the woods. Research was done at the reconstruction site at the Institute of American Indian studies in Washington, Connecticut for authenticity in depicting a village setting.
A bordered image is found in Griswold's Native American Gallery for a Greeting Card of this oil painting.
10 x 20 oil painting done on hand stretched canvas, this comes framed in a refurnished gold painted frame. You can contact me if you would like an picture of it framed or see my original oil painting galley on Etsy.com titled NGARTSITE

I so love it that you have researched and paid tribute to our Native American peoples with your paintings. I grew up in upstate NY and often visited the sites of Indian villages with their reconstructions of dwellings that looked just like this. like/f
Nancy Griswold replied:
Anne, thanks so much for such a nice comment, I am glad you like it and have seen the reconstructions too!

While in New England many years ago, I remember visiting a museum that had a reconstruction of a long house. This is a wonderful way to use your amazing talent to bring history to life, and to honor the Native Americans who were here before us. like/f
Nancy Griswold replied:
Maybe it was this museum in Connecticut Anne. Thanks so much for the comment an like/fav
