I began this painting on location at the entrance to Indian Head Resort in Lincoln, New Hampshire on a warm November afternoon. As I was leaving dusk light of an orange glow suddenly embraced the subject of the Indian Head rock formation, so I completed the painting at my work space at home hoping to capture some of the remembrance of that striking light.
Indian Head is actually the summit of Mount Pemigewasset in the White Mountains of Lincoln, New Hampshire. The head formation which resembles a Mohawk Indian measures 98 feet from Forehead to Chin and was written up in "Ripley's Believe It or Not" long ago. The Indian Head resort is a popular hotel with restaurant , accommodations and wonderful viewing towers to see this amazing rock formation.

The wonderful array of grays and violets in this Indian Head Mountain scene are splendid Nancy. Your lighting in the paintings you share here on FAA is always excellent, as well as your used of fearless, bold paint strokes. I love your work always. F/L.

How beautifully you have captured this landmark in your painting, Nancy! We have a mountain called "Chief's Head Mountain" here in Colorado which I painted, so this piece spoke to me immediately. I like the way you handled the trees in the foreground, too. like/f

Some of my favorite tones are in this painting. Those violets, blues and grays create a special mood and atmosphere. Your expertise makes it alive with feeling. F/L.

Beautiful light effect, Nancy! LF

Thanks Bonnie, in November here we often get orange and deep red glows during dusk

Nancy, I like the nice dramatic statement of this particular mountain. Also like the loose painting of the foreground trees. Limited palette is also effective.
Steve Gass
Nice work Nancy, I guess he's looking for the Old Man, l/f.
Nancy Griswold replied:
Your so funny, yes old man is just over the hill, or he used to be ..until he fell.
