I photograph I took of a friend who is scraping a hide during a tanning event where the trade of tanning by hand and the way the Native Americans did it was taught. Creating a soft hide is a long and laborious craft which evolves very slowly after many stages and hours of hard work. This is the first stage of scarping and cleaning the hide, in which the hide is draped on a long large log. A special scarping tool is used which is seen here. This event used road kills for their skins.
