Description
Another one of my favorite photographs as the moment captured this beautiful shadow which was moving and interacting with the woman as she moved.
The woman here is scraping a hide that has been stretched as it has fur on one side. It is a long and labor some process. I was taken with her shadow dancing on the hide as she moved when scraping. The sun was setting and we were outdoors on a late November day in the New Hampshire mountains.
I learned how to tan hides in the same traditional manner that the Native Americans did by attending a workshop. The animals used were road kills and supplied for this event. Nothing was wasted, we learned old time brain tanning skills and the end result was warm, soft hides which can be worn and appreciated in the winter months.
An interesting note is when looking at this photo is that Native American women were in charge of anything to do with teepees, including building it, erecting it, breaking it down for transports.
