I painted this on location at the divide on top of the Kancamagus Highway just after entering into Saco Valley At almost 3000 feet. The bears are fictitious. they are native to this area and it was bear season.
The elevation of Kancamagus Mountain on the right is 3698 feet. Green Cliff is the knobby looking mountain on the left and has an elevation of 2926 feet. The backside of Green cliff is all cliff. Both these mountains sport hikers and plenty of wildlife. Black bear and moose are spotted regularly. I enjoyed visiting with many from abroad as I painted. Folks from Australia and Nepal were amongst internationals visiting the White Mountain National Forest. The breezes were cool, bugs were light and the view was forever changing on a clear day.
Kancamagus "The Fearless One" was the grandson of Passaconaway.
Passaconaway "Child of the Bear" was Kancamagus's grandfather. Passaconaway passed along his offers of peace to other tribes and united over 17 Indian tribes within central New England in 1627. This unification formed the later known Panacook Confederacy. Passaconaway ruled the Panacook Confederacy until he death in 1669
This original oil painting now has a home in Nevada.

Big congratulations on your wonderful features Nancy. Outstanding work and with that touch of sky and clouds I am ready to go there. F/L.
Nancy Griswold replied:
Randy, if you can get to the White Moutain National forest, go over the Kancamagus Highway on a clear day, so many wonderful places on the way through the mountain pass.
