I painted this from my impression of a tiny New England village of West Rumney, NH. It is a The village is located off of Route 25 in New Hampshire west of Plymouth. Route 25 used to be the railroad from Boston to Quebec. It has one church, general store and about 20 dwellings and was settled in circa 1770's. I see this village only in a fast glance through the trees as we travel by on Route 25. With defoliation of winter the stark white buildings seem to speak of New England history. This is a fast alla prima sketch based on my impression of this winter day we passed by it.
The village is located at the southern edge of the White Mountain National Forest.
The Boston, Concord and Montreal Railroad commenced service to West Rumney in 1850-1851. Later, I heard, the railroad changed to the Boston and Maine Railroad and stayed in service on these tracks until the 1950s when Route 25 was built to replace the rail service.
