I painted this on location for three afternoons in the rolling hills of Newbury, Vermont. I was on a dirt road and the entrance to Hidden Springs Studio which is the home of Robert Chapla, another fine artist and painter. The days were amazing as I watched the colors and light change before my eyes. A perfect location with intoxicating colors combined with warm fall temperature and breezes. It could not have been better conditions for plein air painting.

The presence of another artist nearby made it comfortable and I was able to visit Robert Chapla and catch him in his afternoon painting in the barn. His dog, Anu, made me feel at home as well. The farmhouse and barn were being restored and brought back to life by himself and his wife. The property was covered with vegetable gardens and newly planted trees. He had been busy harvesting his organic vegetables as many Vermonters do during this season as well as restoring and painting too.

One day and very large flock of Canadian wild geese flew over head and created the largest formation I had seen as they chattered as geese do when flying south. It was a miraculous experience. I also heard the chattering of nearby animals in the forest when I painted, which made me feel as if I were in a forested dream.

I was sorry the painting was done as I needed to leave. A gift to come home with an oil which documented this experience and a bag of organic potatoes and onions from Roberts farm as well.
