Hard to see in the fog but this barn is a sixteen sided barn with an octagonal monitor on the roof. It is 90 feet in diameter. Built in 1906 (another source says 1903); it is one of only four surviving round barns in the state of Vermont. The farm is still working and I pass by this frequently and see the many cows grazing in the field. This time I was so captivated as the fog seemed so mystical as it settled over the valley near the Connecticut River.
Round barns were built because they were more efficient for handling livestock and feeding hay on the inside. They were thought to be warmer as there were no corners for the cold to sit in. The Shakers pioneered the round barn design in 1826.
